American journalist Austin Tice disappeared in August, 2012, two days after his 31st birthday. While his whereabouts are unknown, credible reports indicate that he is alive.
Austin was one of only a few foreign journalists to report from inside Syria during the civil war, and was one of the first American correspondents to witness Syrian-rebel confrontations.
Since his capture in 2012, Austin's family has advocated strongly for his release. In 2015, Reporters Without Borders launched the #FreeAustinTice campaign, working with media outlets to bring awareness to Austin's plight.
To date, over 7000 people have signed a petition for Austin's cause.
