UPDATE Feb.16, 2018:
Deniz Yücel, a German journalist detained in a Turkish prison for over a year without any charges being brought against him, has been released. Yücel has returned to Germany after being freed on Feb.16, 2018.
German reporter, Deniz Yücel, was taken into custody in Turkey on February 14, 2017 on suspicions of membership in a terrorist organization. A Turkish court has ordered Deniz Yücel to be kept in detention while awaiting trial.
The charges are related to a story written by Yücel about the hacking of private emails of Berat Albayrak, Turkey’s energy minister and the son-in-law of Turkish President Erdogan.
Yücel is a dual citizen of Germany and Turkey and is the first German reporter to be detained amidst a widespread crackdown on freedom of the press in Turkey.
German government officials and international human rights organizations are condemning the arrest as an assault on freedom of expression and freedom of press.
