The Right to Report Freely and Safely
The Fahmy Foundation was established by award-winning journalist Mohamed Fahmy and his wife, Marwa Omara to champion free speech and fight the suppression of the press. The nonprofit organization, based in Vancouver, Canada provides financial assistance and advocates for reporters, photographers, and prisoners of conscience unjustly imprisoned worldwide. The board members have built on the extensive global experience gained during the battle to free Fahmy from the legal complications of a fabricated terrorism case that left him unjustly detained for 438 days. Thousands of people and several press freedom organisations donated toward Fahmy’s legal fees. Millions of participants engaged in an unprecedented social media campaign that contributed to his release. Fahmy continues to give back and advocate for those silenced behind bars since he was pardoned in September 2015.
Over the past decade, more than 700 journalists have been killed for reporting the news at least 70 of them in 2015.
Close to 200 journalists remain imprisoned worldwide
54 professional journalists – including one woman – are currently held hostage worldwide, a 35% increase over last year.
